L'Architettura degli Scarti. Teorie e pratiche per la progettazione sostenibile dei centri di riciclo e riuso

Until the mid-20th century, waste management always involved vast agricultural areas outside the city; however, with the expansion of metropolises and the consequent increase in wastelands, we are now witnessing an uncontrolled, worrying coexistence of inhabited and contaminated areas. The problem of waste disposal, as well as the issue of waste recovery and reuse, thus informs the question of land reclamation and maintenance, requiring architectural design to pay attention to collection, initial management and reuse centres close to inhabited areas. Said centres are structures used for waste disposal and intended to host social and educational initiatives, with the main objective of making citizens aware of the practice of recycling; they are artefacts whose typology still appears to be uncertain, thus making it necessary to carry out a critical investigation in order to identify solutions capable of providing practices for rebalancing, qualifying and restoring the urban environment.
