Mediterraneo Antico. Economie Società Culture sets out to be a venue and a tool for critical reflection on a material and human space whose cultural, social and also political unity was achieved through the Greek and Hellenistic-Roman koiné.
The merging of different spaces, societies, and cultures within the connective tissue represented by the Greek language and culture; the processes of integration - or marginalization - within the Greco-Roman world achieved in different ways, some bloodless, but mostly repressive, aimed at the "normalization" of the local societies with the collaboration of the dominant classes; the recurrence of breakaway trends in Late Antiquity with the consolidation of the local cultures; the birth and development of the great religious movements based on a large-scale process of "democratization of culture"; the transformation of the Hellenistic-Roman society during the Late Antiquity - are some of the more significant events taking place in the Mediterranean area. In this sense the chronological gap is created by the termination of this unity and the advent of Islam.
The review, which is structured around monographic nuclei and with articles by distinguished scholars on current scientific research on the ancient world set out to be a center of scientific production and processing, a stimulus for the discussion of new theories and research practice, as well as vehicle for updating knowledge and analysis of new events in the international scene of ancient studies. The large Scientific Committee, in which several eminent Italian and foreign scholars are actively involved, guarantees the interdisciplinary nature and the dialogue among the various historiographic trends that are the only ones that can ensure the successful outcome of the project.
