Ugo Bernasconi (1874-4960), a painterwriter trained in Paris at the school of Eugène Carrière and until 1918 (date of his definitive move to Cantù together with his family) moving among the cultural centres of Rome, Florence and Milan, is a prominent exponent of xxth century moralism. The aphoristic form of his writing about artists, literary choices, his own voluntary 'exile' in the provinces - almost living 'notoriously hidden' according to his friend Anselmo Bucci - are the sum of an existence lived on the margins of society, of active partecipation in the critical debate in the artistic-literary journals in the first half of the century.
The documentary material donated by his daughter Eletta Marchi, to the Scuola Normale Superiore is evidence, in manuscripts for the most part unpublished and volumes from his library, of frenetic daily activity (typewritten pages, notes, drafts of writings, notebooks, loose sheets) and reading. The vast collection of letters, in particular, document fascinatingly the cultural exchanges and close ties with some of the protagonists of the artistic and literary culture of last century.
The countless correspondence with Papini, Soffici, Carrà, Tosi, Vanni e Giovanni Scheiwiller, Pancrazi, Wildt, Grubicy, Bucci, Linati, Boine, Ferrazzi are listed and described in their consistency in this inventary, a first step for a documentary approach to the literary work of Bernasconi's literary work.
Besides, the volume is intended in the introductory essay and the extra informatory notes, as a useful study instrument and check of the context of early xxth century journals where Bernasconi had the change to collaborate, in particular, after «Emporium» and «La Riviera Ligure», le Fiorentine «La Voce», «Il Vaglio», «Il Frontespizio», «Il Ponte» and le Milanesi «L'Esame», «Il Convegno».
