Rembrandt en zijn school

The Fondation Custodia is famous in particular for its fine collection of drawings. Founder Frits Lugt was a great admirer of Rembrandt. In 1899 the fourteen-year-old Frits wrote a substantial biography of his hero, to whom he remained faithful for the rest of his life. Lugt was a 'perfect enthusiast'. As a collector and an artist he followed his own feelings, taste and love for art. The result is almost tangible in Rembrandt and his school. Lugt acquired 20 of Rembrandt 's drawings, including his masterwork Saskia in bed. Everything about Rembrandt and his environment excited him, the latter being represented by the work of Jan Lievens, Gerbrandt van der Eeckhout, Govert Flinck, and the delicate landscapes of Lambert Doomer.
