The research documented in this volume brings together a selection of educational projects for the German cities of Frankfurt, Lübeck, Greifswald and Hamburg, developed within the 1st Year Master's Degree Laboratory at the Politecnico di Milano from 2019 to 2025. All these cities date back to medieval times, whose compactness is based on the Gothic-merchant house type - understood as a house built on a narrow plot and developed in depth - which represents, within the classification of housing types, a persistent model that, in our opinion, is still relevant today.
