Rothweil, wohl 1676 im Elsaß geboren und in Straßburg oder Paris ausgebildet, ist 1701 in Hanau erstmals als Ingenieur nachweisbar. Er stand ab 1702 als Landhauptmann in nassauweilburgischen Diensten und war mit Bauvorhaben in Neuwied, Hachenburg und Hanau befasst, ehe er um 1709/10 nach Arolsen berufen wurde. Hier entwarf er das Schloss, das zu den bedeutendsten Anlagen in Hessen gehört. Seitdem war er nicht nur für die Stadt Arolsen, sondern auch für das gesamte Bauwesen sowie den Straßen- und Wegebau in Waldeck und Pyrmont zuständig. Das Wirken des Baumeisters wird nun erstmals ausführlich in diesem Aufsatzband gewürdigt
