Bereits Jacob Burckhardt bezeichnete Christus und die Ehebrecherin als das venezianische Lieblingssujet . Er blieb uns jedoch eine Antwort auf die Frage schuldig, woher im 16. Jahrhundert die Neigung der Venezianer für das Thema stammte. Heute sind rund sechzig Gemälde der Adultera aus der Seerepublik erhalten, die auf die groÃ?e Fülle der dortigen Bildproduktion hinweisen, während zur selben Zeit im übrigen Italien das Motiv so gut wie nicht begegnet. Die vorliegende Untersuchung widmet sich diesem Kuriosum und legt unterschiedlichste Gründe dar, weshalb das Sujet in der Serenissima so deutlich favorisiert wurde.Â
