In 1961 he worked for Tom Kublin as an assistant for the French fashion collections shootings.
In 1965 he began to collaborate with Vogue Italia: the cover of the first edition was by Barbieri. His shootings for Italian, French, German, American Vogues gave him the chance to be chosen by the greatest fashion designers (Valentino, Armani, Saint-Laurent, Ferrè, Versace) for their advertising campaigns.
In 1978 the German magazine Stern defined him as one of the fourteen photographers who created
fashion photography. His pictures are exhibited in the Albert and Victoria Museum in London and in the Kunstforum Museum in Vienna.
