In the summer of 1838 Augusta Holmes and her husband set out from Liverpool with the intention of riding all the way to Italy on horseback. The equestrian venture, described in detail in Holmes' narrative, took eight months, during which they passed through Calais, Paris, Lyon, Turin, Geneva, Mont Blanc, Lake Maggiore, Milan, Parma, Modena, Bologna and Pisa, among many other places, which Holmes, an obviously well educated horsewoman, reports in an engaging prose style.
