It was not until 1939 that art historians rediscovered Willem van Tetrode, a sculptor born in Delft. At that time, it became clear that he and a sculptor known in Italy as Guglielmo Fiammingo were one and the same. The book's three sections are dedicated to sketching the life and work of Willem van Tetrode, reporting on the spectacular X-ray studies made of his bronzes, and reconstructing his masterpiece: the Count of Pitigliano's art collection dating from 1560 that features twenty of Van Tetrode's sculptures.
