Peter Zimmermann's paintings entertain with the viewer a relationship of seduction and diffidence, of closeness and distance: they enfold the audience in sensuality while never allowing themselves to be grasped completely. There is a sense that an image lies at the source of their abstract forms, but the identification of this image is not permitted. It is precisely because of this approach of contrasts that the paintings remain "active" at length: magmatic and mutating under the observer's gaze, they are the object of a process of decoding that extends indefinitely without ever reaching a final accepted solution.
