Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, is right at the heart of that sea along the shores of which the main civilisations of the ancient world have developed. A fixed stopping place along the east-west and north-south routes, an intersection of goods, people and culture since prehistory, a land crammed with natural resources, all through the antiquity and beyond Sicily has been playing a role that matched its geographical centrality. «Sicilia antiqua» aims at highlighting for the whole wide world the sometimes unrecognised central role that Sicily had been playing in ancient times, mostly through an archaeological approach to problems; it aims at making room for valuable historical essays open to all classical antiquity studies, from the history of art to the history of religions, from prehistory to the late antiquity.
