The journal was established in 2000, aiming to create a place for distinguished Italian and foreign scholars to compare common research topics, unquestionably benefiting progress in these studies, and encouraging the worldwide diffusion of works from the golden age of our literature. "Letteratura italiana antica" (LIA) explores Italian literature of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with particular focus on unpublished or rare texts. Unlike other journals of Italian studies, it boasts an uniquely authoritative scientific committee comprised of 250 scholars: the foremost philologists and historians of Italian Medieval and Renaissance literature and language from five continents, representing the most prestigious universities in the world.
The journal is directed by Antonio Lanza, distinguished scholar of the literature of the Due-, Tre- and Quattrocento, author of more than thirty important books, including Studi sulla lirica del Trecento (1978), Polemiche e berte letterarie nella Firenze del primo Rinascimento (1989, 2a ed.), Firenze contro Milano. Gli intellettuali fiorentini nelle guerre con i Visconti (1991), Primi secoli (1991), La letteratura tardogotica. Arte e poesia a Firenze e Siena nell'autunno del Medioevo (1994) and Freschi e minii del Due, Tre e Quattrocento (2002) as well as many editions of a multitude of ancient texts since 1973.
Up to now LIA has issued seven large volumes (2000-2007), publishing editions of texts and articles by world-class scholars in the field. It is published by Accademia Editoriale, with the imprint Moxedano editrice.
