Constant Permeke grew up in an artistic milieu. His father was an art restorer and art painter, as well as the curator of the museum in Oostende. In 1908 he first saw works by Vincent van Gogh at an exhibition, but Permeke was most influenced by Emile Claus. Permeke briefly joined the artist colony in Sint Martens-Latem, but he wanted to get away from luminism, seeking his own form of expressionism instead. Permeke evolved to become the leading figure of Flemish Expressionism.
