An examination of the 1781 case of Capt. Collingwood and his ship the Zong, and the subsequent scandalous lawsuit. Fearing that the ship was off course, the captain ordered that part of the 'cargo' was to be thrown overboard: a shipment of Africans bound for slavery in America. Walvin contends that this deplorable event fuelled Britain's awakening abolition movement, and determined the moral and political trajectory of the ending of slavery. He also discusses how the case, though unique in the history of slave ships, has come to be understood as typical of life on such ships.
