Around 1600, a new style of sculpture started to evolve and flourish in the German-speaking lands. Dramatic wood and stone figures peopled the palaces, gardens and churches of Munich, Berlin, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Vienna and Prague. These great works of art are little known outside Germany and Austria, partly because their colour and vivacity are so astoundingly different from the sculpture that was being produced in Italy, France and Northern Europe at that time.
