This volume gathers the results of interdisciplinary research undertaken on the extra urban area of the ancient city of Pompeii concerning the paleo-botanic, archaeology, geophysics, knowledge and securing of the site as well as its restoration, preservation, urban and architectural scale and improvements in fruition. Diverse fields of research have provided an overview of the Pompeian site from different perspectives, contributing to a significant increase in awareness of the issues concerning the western suburbs of Pompeii.
The Insula Occidentalis of Pompeii is presented as a strategic area for improving accessibility to and fruition of the archaeological site. It includes some of today's main entranceways to the ancient city and acts as the principal interface between the archaeological area and the modern city, contained in the buffer zone delimitated by UNESCO. Following the analyses of these specific features, the researchers have argued for a diversified fruition of the site, alleviating the pressure placed on the most treaded paths by the flow of visitors, and suggesting a comprehensive rethinking of this part of the ancient city, that from the Suburban Baths extends to the Villa dei Misteri.
The result, exhibited on the pages of this book, is an organic and coherent project based on advanced diagnostic analyses and archaeological research for a strategic plan for the restoration, enhancement and accessibility of a long-forgotten area of Pompeii with the objective of increasing the public's understanding of it whilst respecting its historical significance.
