This is the first work of Pietro Ellero, widely known as the "19th-century Beccaria" (after Cesare Beccaria, the great opponent of the death penalty in the previous century). Ellero, who was a professor of criminal law at the University of Bologna, a magistrate of the highest Italian courts and a member of parliament, also founded a special journal on the abolition of capital punishment. His efforts were finally rewarded when abolition was decreed by the Codice Zanardelli in 1890.
