Am 3. April 1920 stieg Franz Kafka am Bahnhof in Meran aus dem Zug. Der Beamte aus Prag" war schwer krank, litt an Tuberkulose. Sein fast dreimonatiger Aufenthalt fällt in eine Schwellenzeit": Die Belle Époque des Weltkurortes war unwiederbringlich dahin, Südtirol fand sich nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges als Teil des Königreichs Italien wieder. Aus dem Meran jener Zeit schrieb der Schriftsteller seiner tschechischen Übersetzerin Milena Jesenská berauschende Briefe. Was als beruflich bedingte Korrespondenz begonnen hatte, wurde zum weltberühmten Briefdrama.
