Three hundred years ago Tsar Peter the Great spent some time in the Netherlands. During his second trip in 1717, he visited Het Loo, which was famous for its gardens and fountains. His interest in European palaces and gardens was to inspire the design of Peterhof near St. Petersburg. The opulently furnished Peterhof was the favourite summer residence of the Romanovs, just as Het Loo was the favourite of the Orange dynasty. The exhibition at Het Loo contains the most important and remarkable items of the Peterhof collection, including the paintings Peter the Great purchased in Holland, pieces of the famous Guriev dinner service and the throne of the last Tsar and occupant of Peterhof, Nicholas II.
