The book is divided into two parts. In the first, our attention will be focused on how language fills lexical gaps resulting from expanding horizons; the conscious efforts to use and improve native resources by making English a suitable vehicle for scientific method, the way its resources have been stretched with colonial expansion and how it has had to succumb to an influx of foreign elements which until the seventeenth century were totally extraneous to European languages. In the second part of the monograph, the focal point will be the globalization of English; the effects the hegemony of American English is having on British English and the signs of fragmentation of English in spite of its global status and the standardizing effects of international communication."
