International furor with their larger-than-life-sized woodcuts and unconventional typewriter drawings. For their latest project, the two artists have taken up a special challenge: their Dresden Paraphrases reinterpret outstanding prints from the Collection of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs in Dresden, describing a unique kind of cultural transfer between ennobled historical masterpieces and a current stance in international contemporary art.
Gert and Uwe Tobias availed themselves of, among other things, copper engravings by the Master of the Playing Cards from the mid-fifteenth century, virtuoso chiaroscuro woodcuts by Ugo da Carpi from the early sixteenth century, engravings by the so-called Dresden Chinoiserie from the early eighteenth century, and last, but not least, the revolutionary panel works of Hermann Glöckner from the thirties
