This important reference works presents, in a detailed fashion, over 300 pieces belonging to the Musee d'art et d'histoire in Geneva, which span from 1700 to 1835. The long history of firearms based on flintlocks is illustrated through the holdings of the museum that include a large choice of civilian and hunting pieces together with military weapons formerly housed at the old Arsenal of Geneva. Both typologies demonstrate the great skills and decorative tastes of the gunsmiths of the time, Swiss and foreign alike. The book illustrates and catalogues a great diversity of of firearms: rifles, muskets, arquebuses, carbins, grenade launchers, rampart muskets used to defend Geneva. Handguns, both civilian and military pistols, are also well represented, as well as all the accessories needed to use firearms: powder flasks, pouches, bayonets. All the objects are illustrated and numerous details - to show the high quality of craftmanship - and marks by manufacturers are reproduced
