from the expert doctor to the young colleague who approaches this therapy for
the first time. Both, I hope, will find useful information for their practice.
In the long research work that accompanied the writing of this text, I realized
that there is not much systematized in the sclerotherapy of telangiectasias. There
are many "beliefs" but little evidence and this is well represented by the extreme
variety of treatments (and the surprising fact that all of them report good results).
This manual will try to help make this treatment a little less "artisanal" by trying
to identify the scientific prerequisites for therapeutic decisions.
The volume includes an in-depth treatment of the etiopathogenesis and anatomy precisely to try to substantiate the therapeutic path that the sclerotherapist
will have to face with the patient. In addition, much space will be given to the
injection technique, a real obstacle for less experienced doctors.
In this regard, I also wanted to include contributions from colleagues of proven
experience in order to provide the reader with different points of view. This is also
to underline that it is not possible at the moment to speak of "absolute truth". As
I have always maintained, the practice of an expert phlebologist can only be the
sum and synthesis of the many other practices with which he or she has come
into contact in his professional life.
The English edition has been made possible with the help and commitment
of collegues from the British Association of Sclerotherapists and I wish to thank
Alastair Lewis, Richard Oliver and Haroun Gajraj for their work.
In thanking all those who have contributed to this book, I want to wish you a
good reading and a lot of professional success.
