Le musée du Havre est l'un des grands bénéficiaires de la politique des envois de l'Etat dans les musées de province au XIXe siècle. Des scènes historiques ou mythologiques, des nus ou des paysages, ainsi que des copies de maîtres sont régulièrement envoyés par l'Etat après leur exposition au Salon, les dépôts venant constituer un mode d'enrichissement des collections privilégié. Les célèbres collections Campana et La Caze, léguées à l'Etat en 1863 et 1869, ont permis de faire entrer au musée du Havre des oeuvres qui comptent parmi ses chefs-d'oeuvre des écoles anciennes.
