Associé au mouvement troubadour dans sa jeunesse, Claudius Jacquand ne se départit jamais d'une sensibilité particulière au genre historique. À la fin de sa carrière, il expose au Salon de 1870 Les Derniers Moments de Christophe Colomb. L'oeuvre donne une représentation théâtrale de l'homme des Amériques, sujet très en vogue dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Ce genre historique, peu représenté dans les collections du musée du Havre et parfaitement contemporain de la conquête de liberté des impressionnistes, reflète les tensions qui traversent la scène artistique de l'époque.
