Pompei I 14. Le Unità Abitative e i Materiali in Contesto

The immense built heritage of the Vesuvian cities still represents, more than 250 years after their discovery, a fertile ground for research, especially when scholars’ attention is drawn to lesser-known contexts in areas of more recent exploration. The study conducted on insula I 14 exemplifies in an exemplary way the possibilities offered by an investigation of this kind: an essentially unprecedented context that proved to be a harbinger of important reflections on the urban development and settlement "patterns" of the southeastern sector of the city. The analysis of building techniques, stratigraphic relationships, and surviving wall and floor decorations allowed for the reconstruction of the macrophases of occupation of the block, with the inevitable changes that individual housing units underwent over the course of their long settlement history.
