This richly illustrated publication summarises the course of the symbolic movement in the Netherlands (1890-1900) and its continued effect on Dutch art and applied art early in the twentieth century (1900-1935). Although symbolism flourished only briefly in the Netherlands, it has had a great impact on the development of modern art. It laid the way for the birth of abstract art and led to the development of the Stijl movement.
