Cet ouvrage est consacré à la redécouverte du peintre maniériste florentin Giovanni Capassini (1510-1579). On sait aujourd'hui bien peu de choses de ce peintre, en dehors de sa venue en France entre 1553 et 1568, notamment à Lyon à partir de 1555, où il travaille pour le cardinal François de Tournon, archevêque de Lyon.
Probablement élève d'Andrea Del Sarto, il est l'auteur de quelques ouvres attribuées avec certitude, comme une Sainte Famille avec le jeune Jean-Baptiste et sainte Catherine, aujourd'hui conservée au musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes. L'objectif de cet ouvrage est d'approfondir sa vie et son ouvre, encore peu connues.
