The Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich, dating from 1758, is one of the finest collections of drawings and prints in Germany and one of the most important graphics collections in the world. It housesaround 400,000 works from the 15th century to the modern era.

This book accompanies an exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, 100 Master Drawingsfrom Munich, and includes full-colour illustrations of some of the most spectacular works. The works in this volume range from rough preparatory sketches to meticulously detailed studies, executed in a variety of media including silverpoint, chalk, ink and watercolour. Among the many extraordinary pieces are Old Dutch and German prints, 19th-century German drawings and works by Du¨rer and Rembrandt.There are also reproductions of the many compelling works of contemporary graphic art for which the museum is best known.
