Known for her performances, during which numerous models stage the ritual of being and appearing, Vanessa Beecroft (Genoa, 1969), is one of the most internationally renowned Italian artists. An original inventor of her own artistic language, Beecroft directly addresses themes that are central to contemporary culture, such as identity, multiplicity, the body and sexuality, mixing glamour with the history of painting. Her events involve the audience in a direct confrontation, pushing to the limit the tension of a happening that is simultaneously unique, real and abstract.
This exhibition, curated by Marcella Beccaria, is the first retrospective of the artist and presents an original interpretation of her work, featuring a new large-scale performance along with photographic and video works.
This catalogue of the Fall 2003 exhibition at Castello di Rivoli is the most complete publication of the artist's work to date and includes critical text and a detailed bio-bibliography.
Beecroft has presented her performances and works in numerous international instititutions including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (1998), the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2000), the Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2001), and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice (2001).
