Subodh Gupta

This catalogue will accompany the first retrospective on Subodh Gupta in France, which will take place at the Monnaie de Paris in April 2018. For this event, several of the artist's most iconic artworks, such as Doot, Very Hungry God or Faith Matters, will be exhibited in order to retrace his entire career from the 1990s to his latest experimentations with video and sound. These artworks come from public and private collections and a new version of Specimen No. 108 is especially made for the courtyard of the Monnaie de Paris.
Characterised by the use of found objects and utensils from daily life, Gupta's work touches on universal themes: the opposition between rural and urban life, craftmanship and industrialisation, one-of-a-kind and mass-produced, personnal and monumental scale. This catalogue will also offer in-depth essays written by renowned art critics to help the reader better understand the production of this major contemporary artist.
