Cette exposition vise à dépasser l'approche traditionelle "du peintre des quatre saisons", très admiré localement mais ne trouvant pas place dans la grande histoire de l'art, en soulignant en revanche l'originalité et la portée de sa peinture en plein air, et l'èxtraordinaire qualité qu'atteint souvent son oeuvre peint et dessiné.
Le catalogue d'exposition réunira un ensemble de grand ampleur, principalment concentré sur la période avant 1914, et analysera le contexte historique qui a produit les ambiguïtés de la fortune critique de Frechon.
Une attention particulière sera portée aux fusains qui placent Frechon au niveau de Charles Angrand, voire de Seurat.
