This study affords a summary of the refurbishing by Massimiliano Vaiani of an important architectural complex, built in the 16th Century in the countryside near Florence as an orphanage belonging to the Spedale degli Innocenti, then turned into a lordly mansion and finally abandoned after World War II. The recovery was based on careful historical research, and on accurate reconnaissance of the spaces of the structure, of the distribution features and the condition of the buildings making up the complex. The recovery, promoted and followed up by the Vaiani family of Campi Bisenzio, started with scrupulous structural consolidation, and then moved on to renovation of the spaces, combining the necessary attention to conservative restoration with the requirements dictated by spatial distribution, regulations, facilities and indoor and outdoor fittings, in order to turn the complex into an important space for receiving travellers: Il Granducato - a Boscolo First Class Hotel.
