The jewel is one of the most immobile of the objects that accompany our lives and bodies: the production techniques and the materials are the same as in the past, as are the forms and types. The end of ideologies and the hybridisation of contexts in the 20th-century radically altered the perception and meaning of the jewel, encouraging the semantic, material and value liquidity that is a characteristic of the contemporary. Hints of the future can be glimpsed from the fragments of the present, where new materials and new technologies will play a decisive role in the innovation of the jewellery sector. This book presents the most innovative materials and technologies and sketches the futures of the jewel according to three scenarios: precious tradition, collective creativity and wearable technologies. A selection of jewels made with 3D printing by 35 international designers shows that, as Søren Kierkegaard said, "life can be understood only by looking back but must be lived looking forward".
