In 2016 Arte Continua presented Anish Kapoor's first solo exhibition in Cuba. The works that the artist decided to present continue to redefine and expand the concept of sculpture in art.
In 2015, Anish Kapoor already exhibited in Havana, in collaboration with Galleria Continua: in May he took part in the XII Havana Biennial with the artwork Wounds and absent objects, a site-specific installation for the cinema-theater Payret. In November, in collaboration also with Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, he exhibited the work Endless Column (1992) at the exhibition Follia Continua! 25 años de Galleria Continua.
The 2016 exhibition project for Arte Continua in Havana was specifically designed for the Águila de Oro space, where five sculptures investigated the relationship between the fullness and the void. Due to the particular colour intensity given by the pigmentation, the concavities' dimensions of the sculptures are not intelligible; gazing at them fosters a sense of vertigo because, according to the artist1: "The void (...) has many presences. Its presence as fear is towards the loss of the self, from a non-object to a non-self." A negative space for Kapoor does not yield an absolute void. In fact, the artist states2: "The void does not really exist because we are constantly filling it with our expectations and fears. My sculptures that are called empty objects therefore contain a possibility. They stimulate a philosophical thought but are not the answer to anything. They simply present a condition; you have to do the rest".
