Ces livres d'art présentent un ensemble unique au monde, que Josef Mueller a commencé à réunir il y a près de cent ans. En 1908 et 1909, Josef Mueller acquiert à Paris des ouvres maîtresses d'Hodler et de Cézanne. Ouvrant sa collection aux chefs-d'oeuvre de l'art universel, il achète à Paris, en 1920, sa première et importante ouvre d'art précolombien, la Déesse de l'eau aztèque. Grand esthète, homme de culture, son gendre Jean Paul Barbier-Mueller portera cette collection, comme celles dédiées aux autres domaines artistiques (arts d'Afrique, arts d'Océanie, art cycladique, arts d'Asie du Sud-Est...), à l'excellence qui la caractérise aujourd'hui. Provenant du continent américain, les plus de 300 ouvres qui la composent (sculptures en pierre et en bois, céramiques, tissus, objets rituels) sont représentatives des plus importantes cultures précolombiennes et illustrent, à travers les chefs-d'ouvre emblématiques ponctuant chaque ensemble, tels que la statue Chupicuaro et le vase Tarasque provenant tous deux de l'ancienne collection de Guy Joussemet, la richesse de ces civilisations.
