Michail Vrubel (Omsk, 1856 - Pietroburgo 1911), a Russian academic painter, was inspired by contemporary French art and classic Italian painting beyond Russian tradition. His production is the best Russian example of the passage from Realism to Symbolism.
Alexej von Jawlensky (Torjok, 1864 - Wiesbaden, 1941) enriched his academic culture, initially in Russia, then in Munich where he settled in 1896. A friend of Kandinsky, he took part to the Blaue Reiter, and then joined the Die Blaue Vier: simple geometric forms and bright colours were the main features of his art that acquired an intense mystic aspect especially in the second half of his career.
