The book is about the recent work of Annie Ratti who for twenty years creates environments that combine form and function, ethics and aesthetics, inviting the viewer into a space of politics and pleasure. Drawing on the vernacular of domestic furniture, the artist has created objects that relate to the body-she has made sculptures for sitting or swinging in, reading from or sleeping on. As well as articulating such universally generic forms -the chair, the bed-she also looks to specifics-of a particular geographical location, a historical moment, a social situation. Annie Ratti transforms her private experience of the world into a public and participatory arena.
A peripatetic figure, who moves between her native Italy to France, Britain and America, her work is informed by the detached yet incisive view of an outsider. Annie Ratti will offer a similar vantage point to the viewer.
