This volume collects and reviews the results of a research project on the environmental image and the architectural characteristics of the approximately 13 kilometers of porticoed pathways built in Turin over four centuries. The project was conducted under the aegis of the Dipartimento di Ingegneria dei Sistemi Edilizi e Territoriali of the Politecnico di Torino. The entire route system of Turin's porticoes was surveyed and drawn in various scales according to the contents and research methods of city surveying. The goal was to identify the morphological and formal characteristics of each of the components and to hold these constantly in relation to the architectural and historical image of the context of their urban setting. The designs aim to highlight the structure of the architectural characterization and the environmental image of the porticoed spaces. They are accompanied by a wealth of original and period photographic documentation.
The text outlines relevant historical events and features comments made by famous authors, bearing witness to the poetic evocations that these places have inspired among random visitors and famous citizens.
