Contents: In Milan in 2006, at the 3° Colore e Conservazione Conference, we have returned to the theme of consolidation with "Franciscan" humility (if the Poverello - saint of restoration - permits), without any excessive enthusiasms for new materials, methods, and technological innovations. We simply wanted to take up the lines and broaden the necessary fundamental research, making it become basic knowledge and a means of communication among the persons involved and conservators. I believe that what has been accomplished is "an act of brain maintenance", which should have been done two generations ago, in memoriam of Cesare Brandi. This has been a truly international conference, organized as the first step towards 2008, when the results of experimentation, once these have been decided, and the lines for the future outlined, and through renewed confrontation with the contributions presented previously, the aim will be to contribute to elevating the practice of restoration to a higher methodological state than in the past.
