One is struck by the foresight and wisdom with which Vittorio Sella (1859-1943), a mountaineering photographer who brought great photography to the high mountains, preserved, catalogued, and promoted his photographs from a young age. A treasure enriched over the years: photography is an act of resistance to the inexorable passage of time, and so is the archive. The snapshot both halts time in an image and quickens the passing instant, fixing it forever in memory and in the document.
Sella's work is illustrated in this volume from an unprecedented perspective, through his approach and his archive, now preserved with rigorous philological care by the Sella Foundation. The contributions of distinguished scholars of photography and mountaineering contained in the volume are accompanied by Sella's marvellous and, in some instances, previously unpublished photographs of the Alps and other important mountain ranges around the world, as well as of his own home environment.
Giulio Favotto's contemporary photographs convey the atmosphere of his workplaces, the spaces dedicated to cataloging and curating photographic material, both then and now.
