The book brings together the results of the first comprehensive study of the network of grain silos built in Italy during the 1930s following the institution of the so-called 'ammassi collettivi' (collective storage facilities). The mapping on a national scale, carried out through the analysis of bibliographic and archival sources, gives a picture of the granary production in Italy at the time, and testifies to the use of a modern architectural language and construction systems. Today, decommissioning and the difficulties of re-functionalisation have led these silos to become elements of urban decay. An understanding of the historical and architectural value of these silos is, therefore, a fundamental step in the definition of coherent guidelines for the conservation and reuse of this built heritage, which is still not properly recognised.
