The 2010 issue features the work of the Italian Paolo Pellegrin (Rome, 1964), who joined Magnum in 2005.
The dichotomy of natural and artificial provides the key to an understanding of the photographer's work, where images captured in the world of the fashion highlight the contrast between the naturalness of the human body and the artifice of the designers' creations.
The same concept is perceptible on a larger scale on observing the world through Pellegrin's images. Revealed before our eyes is a constantly evolving landscape in which vast natural scenarios alternate with the completely manmade panoramas of cities and metropolises, which sometimes find themselves at the mercy of nature once again, as shown by the photographs of the New Orleans floods in 2005. This evocative exploration also prompts reflection on the respect that nature demands and the need for truly sustainable development.
