The material is presented following a typological classification of the motifs, with a great deal of attention paid to the chronological position of each example cited. From this point of view the fixed points are provided, naturally, by the few securely dated works, which are in turn correlated with others datable on the basis of their stylistic features. The brief catalogue entries are furnished with numerous bibliographical references, as up to date as possible. In this sense the volume should serve not only as a repertoire of decorative motifs, but also as an index for the pictorial output of the period. The scholars and students who have already used the Corpus will appreciate its advantages for the study of medieval painting in Italy.
