The Preface summarizes the millenary events up to the constitution of the current State and describes the urban planning and the ancient topography of the Vatican.
The first part explores the City, from the Basilica of Saint Peter to the Necropolis, passing through the Apostolic Library, the Secret Archives and the Gardens, telling the story and describing the original structure, the archaeological discoveries and architecture. An itinerary of every sites is proposed, also guiding the visitor to the discovery of less known contexts.
The second part is dedicated to the Vatican Museums: the plurality of environments is illustrated by the curators of the departments: the world-famous Sistine Chapel, the famous Raphael's Stanze, the Greek Roman statuary of the Pius-Clementine, of the Braccio Nuovo, of the Pius-Christian, of the Gregorian Profane, the Egyptian and the Etruscan Museums, the Ethnological collections and those of contemporary art.
We can define the volume the equivalent of the Red Guide of the Touring Club for the city of Rome, equally comprehensive, reliable, meticulously documented, with in addition, a full colored iconographic set. At the end of the book, a practical information apparatus with different kinds of information useful for the visitor
