Rereading the research on the rural dwellings in Italy is a way of reflecting on the possibilities of explaining our landscapes by describing the external and internal forms of these dwellings and also of retracing the history of 20th-century Italian geography. The essays in the series dedicated to the (so-called) Venezia Giulia and Friuli regions are of even greater interest for two reasons: first, they concern frontier areas afflicted by the two World Wars; and second, the rural dwellings themselves enable us to detect the ethnic differences and cultural similarities of the groups that inhabit them.
