A free spirit, never an advocate of "schools" and transient fashions, the Turin-born architect Sergio Hutter (1926-1999) was the author of over three-hundred projects which, characterised by a refined competence, range from housing to the application of information technology to the building process, from manufacturing plants to large service facilities.
Photographed by Fabrizia di Rovasenda and selected by Elena di Rovasenda and Antonio De la Pierre, his main architectures, so far almost entirely neglected by the critics, are described by Guido Montanari on the basis of a selection of themes which trace back the real construction of the city and the territory, from the post-war "boom" to the shift of the industrial society to today's uncertain scenarios.
His cosmopolitan background, the investigation of the housing theme, from the single villa to the apartment block, the service facilities for tourist resorts, the works aimed at the industry and the service sector, the international competitions, the theoretical speculations on town planning and the architect's profession, the interior design solutions - deeply explored by Germana Bricarello - constitute some of the territories that help us outline the profile of the educated professional, whose work stands out for its careful innovation, "workmanlike" performance and ethical and public commitment.
