From the thick of the woods to shady paths and the tumbling waters of a ravine: in these places, stories of a past now veiled in the mists of time and the people lost with it have been collected to give a voice to the remote and sleepy stones of the many cemeteries, now in ruins, scattered throughout the province of Massa Carrara. Stories not only of abandoned graveyards but also of manor houses, villages and churches, where the old stones moan in concert with the wind winding its way through the cracks, where past glories and events have been buried by neglect and the passing of the seasons. This book tells the story of a journey, on foot and at times arduous, to discover these hidden and mysterious places dotted around the woods of Lunigiana, near the placid Magra river, or perched on the metamorphic and sedimentary rocks of the Apuan Alps, where the howling of the wolves reawakens our ancestral instincts.
