Giovan Battista Belluzzi (1506-1554), called "Sanmarino", is one of the central figures in Renaissance military architecture. In the service of Duke Cosimo de' Medici, he updated the defences of the Duchy of Tuscany, applying the new rules of the Italian bastionated circuit, and wrote unpublished fortification treatises. These are published here in full, together with his youthful diary and his letters, as well as the biography, offering an historical panorama of Italian military architecture in the first half of the 16th century.
